The Dreaded Post I've Been Putting Off...

Hi lovelies, I hope you're having a magnificent day.  It's sunny again and I'm not getting much work done, as I'm too happy to hang out in the backyard with my pets.

I had hoped that this kind of post would never be necessary, but sadly it's time I bring it up.

A very considerate lady in Finland contacted me earlier today.  It seems that an eBay seller has been plucking free printables from this blog and selling printed sheets of them without my consent. And I'm not talking about one or two.  The entire store inventory consists of printables from Ephemera's Vintage Garden as well as other artists. This is really not ok. Alot of hard work goes into creating art, digital and otherwise and to show it online is a huge risk. But I think I speak for many of us who do it when I say that we are happy to share it with all of you in spite of that. We strive to make it easily accessible to you wonderfully talented crafters, but every now and then someone comes along and takes advantage of this.

I'm hoping to resolve this matter smoothly and I'm not naive enough to think that it isn't going on elsewhere as well. I just think it's important that I stand up for this and deal with it as it comes.

I'm happy to keep sharing freebies every week for the time being. I have seen the lovely projects you make and received countless emails and messages of appreciation - as well as the odd report of copyright infringement that you have seen out there.  It warms my heart to know you have my back :)

If you're a crafter who sells, please know that I'm always eager to work out an arrangement to allow commercial use of these and other designs I create.  I want people to have fun with these and to even profit from them, provided it's done through the proper channels. It just takes a simple email to ask me for details.

I will be revising the terms of use on this blog to make them more visible and perhaps even more specific. I worry that this will be off-putting to some, to see the copyright disclaimer displayed so prominently but that is what's needed to try and protect my work.

In the meantime, I thank you all again for hanging in there with me every week.  I absolutely love what I do and I get to do it every day because of you guys.

Much love and gratitude,

  4. This is very shocking situation. I recommend you make a complaint to Ebay. From experience, Ebay takes very seriously the complaints that are made against sellers.
    Good luck!

  6. Thank you, Debbie, for continuing to share your talent with us despite having your rights violated. I so appreciate having your beautiful note cards to add to my journals and bible study notebooks - they add so much to my enjoyment of the studies by having them to use for special points or thoughts on each page. I've also bought several of your collections and love them. Thanks again, I'll be praying that the situation is resolved smoothly and succinctly. Blessings!

  7. Debbie-Anne,

First off let me thank you for the gorgeous freebies. They help to inspire me to create my own ideas. I came up with a journal idea and am currently trying to create my own first digital inspired by your gorgeous creations. I only hope it comes out half as nice as yours. As an artist I know about the struggle to share while trying to keep integrity. I think we should all depend on each other as artists to have each others backs and protect this integrity. Your commercial licenses seem quite reasonable to me. Thank heavens for those who are brave enough to come forward and stand up for us as artists. So BRAVO to Ms. Finland good looking out! Go get em Debbie~Anne! Oh and I must also say that what you wrote was so eloquently put. May I borrow some of that wording for my own site? It is just so professional when ranting would "FEEL" more appropriate. ;)

    1. Lol, yes by all means. Thanks so much. I totally agree that we need to support and empower each other. When someone steals from one of us, they steal from all of us.

  8. Sorry to see this has happened to you This stinks. Thanks to the eagle eyed supporters for their great work. I went to etsy and it seems the seller has been removed so that is a good start. Sadly in such a supportive arty community stealing is rampant.
    All the best xx Michelle

  9. I am so sorry & enraged to read this. I have tried my hand at a bit of digital work & find it extremely hard. So I signed up to a digital site where I am able to purchase kits etc. No one has the right to print & sell other people's work it is just unacceptable!!
I really hope the issue can be resolved soon.

    1. Thank you Paula. I too use digital sites where I can purchase their work for commercial use. It is so important to be vigilant about following proper useage and asking the same of others.

  10. Hello Debbie. What a shame you are having to deal with this unfortunate being having to sponge off someone else. There's always one! I agree with Nathalie you should send them an invoice. Hope you get this sorted without too much fuss. Karen.x

  12. I am actually SHOCKED!!... It never ceases to amaze me what dishonest people think up and carry out. I would never in my wildest dreams even have thought up such a scheme!

It's really very sad to see some people stoop so low for the almighty dollar. So, so sorry this has happened to you.

  13. This is awful and ridiculous. This is rotten. Well, I hope that Ebay is working with you. They have very strict policies when it comes to people getting ripped off.

I am very sorry that you have to go through this as we all are. There are people out there in this world that are no good morally.

You are so kind to put this stuff up here for free for us to get our creativity flowing. You rock.

Again, I'm very sorry that this has happened. It's lousy.

  15. So very sorry to hear of this situation. This really is theft in several ways. First, the obvious in stealing your work and selling it for money. Second, you now have to take your valuable time to deal with the situation in order to get it stopped, and third, until it is resolved, (and often, even long after-until you can let it go) it's difficult to create your beautiful, gorgeous artwork without worrying if someone will try to steal it, too.
I pray that this situation is resolved quickly and easily and that you can get back to creating without having to wonder or worry if someone will do it again. Thank you for bringing this to our attention so that when we go to purchase these type of items we can do diligence to make certain we are purchasing legitimately.
Please let us know if ebay refuses to work with you. I would certainly take my business elsewhere.
Last but certainly not least, thank you so very much for all the beautiful, gorgeous, artwork that you have made and so generously shared with others. May God richly bless you.

  16. Unfortunately this happens all too often and I wonder how many get away with it.
I am so sorry this has happened Debbie as it rather sours the gift of the lovely and inspiring freebies you so generously share. They are such a delight to receive and use and I have also purchased lots too.
    Sending you love and encouragement.

  17. So sorry this has happened. It's sad that some people can't seem to understand what belongs to them, and what doesn't!
I appreciate that you share your beautiful work with us, and hope you are able to resolve the problem.

  18. I love your work and it is so good of you to allow us to use it. We all like something for nothing but it is so unfair for those out there to profit from your hard work, I hope you can resolve the matter soon. Thank you very much for sharing your beautiful creations. Hugs Lesley

  19. This has happened on another site i use, someone had taken the free downloads and was selling them on etsy. Makes me so mad. Thank you for your downloads i have made a few lovely vintage projects with them.

  20. I am sad to say we have the same problem in my dollhouse miniatures hobby. People copy work and sell it as their own. One website I subscribe to asks us not to share her freebies and tutorials on any social media. Perhaps she had the same problem. Perhaps that would help?

  21. I'm so sorry this happened to you. There are, unfortunately, always people who don't care about rules or even fairness! I hope you are able to shut that person down.

  22. May I add my disappointment to the above list. I absolutely love your designs, and have purchased a number of them over time. I am on a limited income and your free items add pizzas to the gifts I make for family. I just love receiving your email each week. Your such a talented lady, so I hope all is cleared without too much angst.

  23. I am so sorry this is happening to you. Sadly, this seems to be happening to a lot of artists. I hope that it all gets worked out for you. Thank you for your beautiful art.

  24. thank you for sharing your art with so many. I love using freebies in the books and things I make for people. Occasionally I do get commissioned to custom make something for someone, so I guess you could call it selling. I have used some freebie items in these books etc, however I don't see it as stealing. before you hiss and boo let me explain. first I am not making a lot of money by any means, usually they buy whats necessary and I make item and get to keep left overs as payment. second im not using one persons graphics exclusively and claiming credit for it, in fact I try very hard to tell everyone exactly where and from who I got inspiration, images etc hoping that they ( many of whom have more money than I do ) will support the people and places I visit because I can't support them. and last but not least I do it for what I believe I the same reason you do it - to make the world a prettier and better place. you share so we can use it and share it, so I pass it on. IF I was ever to have the chance to make a profit I usually come back to my favorite freebie sites and shop. so please do not be offended by my comment just try to understand that not all "sellers" are evil.
